He then claimed that Lily had been fired for a pattern of poor performance and that the burger incident was merely the final violation.
Lily stared at him because the previous evening he had asked her to train a new hire and thanked her for covering a double shift.
Samuel asked Lily whether she had been given any disciplinary warnings.
She said no and explained that Victor often changed the schedule after it had been posted.
Victor interrupted to say that private personnel matters were none of a stranger’s business.
“You made them public when you fired her in front of me,” Samuel replied.
Cars continued turning into the parking lot, and a family waiting near the entrance began walking back toward its minivan.
Lily felt the awful attention of strangers on her face.
She did not want to become a spectacle or an excuse for people to shout at one another.
Samuel appeared to notice because he lowered his voice and asked whether she wanted to leave.
Lily nodded and told Marco that her remaining tips were in the small envelope beneath the register.
Marco said he would bring them to her after his shift.
Victor announced that she would not receive another dollar until the drawer had been counted.
Samuel calmly asked him to document that decision in writing.
The manager’s jaw tightened, and he returned to the building without another word.
Samuel remained beside Lily until her hands stopped shaking.
“I didn’t mean to cost you your job,” he said.
“He made that choice,” Lily answered.
Samuel looked down at the burger, which had begun to cool on its tray.
He took a bite as though refusing to let Victor’s behavior erase the kindness that had started everything.
“I owe you an explanation,” he said when he finished chewing.
Lily told him that he did not owe her anything, but the older man’s face remained serious.
He explained that Rowan Hospitality owned the equipment leasing company that supplied a large portion of Harbor Table’s kitchens.
His company also provided purchasing credit, maintenance service, and an option agreement through a separate investment partnership.
“I helped build the organization that can keep this restaurant open,” he said.
“That does not mean I can decide which people deserve work with a phone call.”
Lily asked why he had told someone to cancel every contract.
Samuel admitted that he had spoken too quickly and had already instructed his attorney to freeze renewals rather than shut off essential service.
