Chapter 22: The Hearing
Rebecca invited me to attend a court hearing related to Noah’s care as a factual witness.
Her attorney explained what topics might be relevant and warned me not to discuss anything beyond my direct knowledge.
I sat in a hallway beside strangers who were waiting for their own difficult family matters to be heard.
When it was my turn, I described the parking lot, the conversation near the fence, and Noah’s brief message to Hannah.
I did not speculate about what Valerie had intended before the first leak.
I did not try to interpret Graham’s expression in the surveillance footage.
I described the child who had run after a kite and the vehicle approaching the lane.
Then I answered questions about the child-protection report and the steps we took afterward.
Valerie sat with her attorney and stared at the table.
Rebecca watched every word.
The hearing did not produce a magical declaration that erased years of conflict.
The court considered the relevant evidence and the recommendations of professionals charged with evaluating Noah’s welfare.
The arrangements were adjusted through a structured plan that increased Rebecca’s responsibilities while preserving appropriate oversight.
When I left, Rebecca thanked me in the hallway.
I told her Noah deserved adults who could disagree without turning him into a bargaining chip.
She looked exhausted but determined.
“I know,” she said.
“And I’m learning how to be one of them.”
It was the most convincing thing she had said since I met her.
