Chapter 15: The Public Accusation
Valerie chose the neighborhood association meeting to accuse me of harassing her family.
She arrived carrying printed screenshots of my messages to Rebecca.
I had exchanged only a few messages with Rebecca, all about contacting the police or her lawyer.
Valerie displayed a partial line that made it look as though I was arranging to take Noah away.
People leaned forward to read it.
I stood in the back of the room and waited until she finished.
Then I asked the meeting chair whether I could respond.
I explained that my water system had been damaged twice,
that police were investigating, and that I would not discuss a child’s private circumstances in public.
Valerie interrupted me.
“You’re hiding behind the child now.”
“No,” I said.
“I’m refusing to use him as entertainment.”
The chair asked her to sit down.
She refused.
She said I had been telling lies about her for weeks.
I asked her to identify one statement I had made to the neighborhood.
She waved the screenshots instead.
Then Priya stood and asked who had given Valerie access to private messages.
The question changed the mood of the room.
Valerie said a family member had forwarded them.
Priya asked why the timestamps were missing.
Valerie’s face reddened.
The chair ended the discussion and reminded everyone that the association was not a court.
Outside, Valerie followed me to the parking lot.
“You’ve turned my daughter against me,” she said.
I told her Rebecca’s decisions belonged to Rebecca.
“She doesn’t understand what Graham will do,” Valerie whispered.
“Then help her stay safe.”
Valerie looked at me as though I had suggested walking into a fire.
“You still think this ends with somebody telling the truth.”
She walked away before I could answer.
