CHAPTER FOURTEEN AH: THE CALL THAT DID NOT COME
Briana spent a Friday evening waiting for Cedric to call after she completed another interview with investigators.
She had told him nothing about the appointment, but for months she had been accustomed to his attention arriving whenever she was frightened.
At nine o’clock, her phone remained silent.
She opened a drawer and found a bracelet he had given her after their first trip together.
She remembered how he had fastened it around her wrist and said she deserved things Damian could never provide.
The memory embarrassed her now because she had enjoyed hearing her husband diminished.
She placed the bracelet in a small box with other gifts she intended to discuss with her attorney.
Then she called her friend Monica, whom she had neglected during the affair.
Monica answered cautiously.
Briana admitted that she had lied about the trips and ignored messages because she did not want anyone asking questions.
Monica said she had suspected something was wrong but had stopped pressing after Briana accused her of jealousy.
Briana apologized.
Monica asked whether she was safe and whether she needed company.
Briana said she was safe but would appreciate dinner the following week.
Monica agreed without pretending the friendship had returned to normal.
After the call, Briana put the bracelet box away and washed the dishes.
She had expected an evening without Cedric’s attention to feel like punishment.
Instead, it felt unfamiliar and quiet.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN AI: THE BUILDING WITH THE LIGHTS ON
Damian visited Keisha’s school after the evening class to repair a ventilation control that had been failing intermittently.
The school had hired his company through its normal procurement process before the foundation became involved.
Niko accompanied him and checked the equipment while Damian reviewed the control sequence.
The problem turned out to be a worn actuator that needed replacement.
Keisha asked whether they could finish the repair before the next morning’s class.
Damian said they could if the supplier had the correct part in stock.
Niko called the supplier and confirmed availability.
They returned with the part and completed the repair after the students had left.
As Damian packed his tools, Lena Kline appeared in the doorway carrying a container of food from the evening class.
She said her father had told her Damian was the person who first explained that the warehouse was not ready.
Damian said he had only inspected a building.
Lena replied that the explanation had made her stop waiting for an opening date that kept moving.
She offered him the container and said the class had prepared extra portions.
Damian accepted after Keisha confirmed it was allowed.
On the drive home, Niko asked whether the meal was part of the consulting fee.
Damian said it was a gift from a student who had worked hard.
Niko said that sounded better than most consulting fees.
They ate the food in the workshop while finishing the next day’s schedule.
Damian thought about the unfinished warehouse and the bright, busy kitchen they had just left.
The contrast did not need a speech.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN AJ: THE LAST INVITATION
Cedric sent Yvette an invitation to a private dinner with two former foundation trustees.
The message said they could resolve the dispute before outsiders destroyed the organization’s reputation.
Yvette forwarded the invitation to Elaine and her attorney.
Elaine asked whether she wanted to attend as a trustee.
Yvette said she would attend only if the meeting had a clear agenda and an independent record.
Cedric rejected those conditions.
He called her directly and said she had become impossible to reason with.
Yvette replied that he was welcome to submit proposals to the board through counsel.
Cedric accused Damian of turning her against him.
Yvette said she had reached her own conclusions about the foundation’s failures.
Cedric asked whether she remembered the promises they made when they married.
She said she remembered them, including the promise to treat each other with respect.
He said she was humiliating him.
Yvette answered that an investigation into services paid for but not delivered was not a personal humiliation campaign.
Cedric said she would lose the people who had once admired her.
Yvette looked at the small stack of thank-you notes from students who had actually begun classes.
She said she was no longer measuring the foundation’s worth by admiration.
Cedric ended the call.
Yvette sat quietly for several minutes before writing a short account of the conversation for her attorney.
Then she went to meet Damian for dinner.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN AK: THE HOUSE WITH TWO KEYS
Damian met Briana at the old house to complete a final inventory before the property was listed for sale.
The real estate agent had advised them to remove personal photographs and repair a loose stair rail.
Damian fixed the rail while Briana packed books from the living room.
They worked in separate rooms until the agent arrived to discuss the listing price.
The agent asked whether they wanted to stage the dining room for photographs.
Briana said they could borrow furniture from the staging company.
Damian agreed.
After the agent left, Briana stood in the empty doorway and said the house looked smaller without their belongings.
Damian said rooms often did.
She asked whether he was happy with Yvette.
Damian said he was getting to know her and did not want to turn the answer into a comparison.
Briana nodded.
She said she had spent months comparing Cedric’s wealth with Damian’s ordinary life and had mistaken money for certainty.
Damian listened without offering reassurance.
She told him she had started looking for work outside Cedric’s industry.
He wished her luck.
When they finished, Briana handed him the second house key.
Damian said she should keep it until the sale was complete.
She said she had another copy and wanted him to have one for scheduled visits.
He took the key and placed it in his pocket.
They locked the door together and walked to separate cars.
Neither looked back until they reached the street.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN AL: THE REQUEST FROM THE AUDITOR
Laila asked Damian to return to the warehouse for one final meeting with the independent reviewers.
She wanted him to explain which construction claims could be assessed from physical conditions and which required testimony from contractors.
Damian arrived with Graham and a list of questions he had prepared.
The reviewers asked whether the warehouse had ever been ready for occupancy during the period advertised.
Damian said the mechanical systems were incomplete when he inspected the site and that the available schedule did not support the advertised opening date.
He could not establish exactly what condition the building had been in six months earlier without additional records.
Graham explained that some unfinished work might have been removed or changed during the project.
The reviewers asked whether Damian believed Northstar had fabricated the construction progress reports.
Damian said he believed the reports were inconsistent with the work he observed, but identifying the author and intent required further evidence.
Laila thanked him for maintaining that distinction.
After the meeting, Damian asked whether his testimony would help recover money.
Laila said the purpose was to establish what could be supported, not guarantee a particular outcome.
Damian admitted that he sometimes wanted the entire matter resolved by one undeniable fact.
Laila said complicated failures rarely offered that convenience.
She reminded him that a reliable conclusion could be less dramatic than a satisfying accusation.
Damian returned to his workshop and reviewed the next day’s job schedule.
The ordinary tasks waiting for him made the investigation feel both smaller and more manageable.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN AM: THE CHILD WHO ASKED WHY
Alma Reyes returned to the foundation office with her son, Mateo, because his school had closed early for a teacher conference.
Simone had arranged a meeting with an independent housing advocate who could help Alma correct the false placement record.
Mateo sat beside his mother and worked on a drawing while the adults reviewed the dates.
The advocate explained that the foundation could provide a statement confirming that it had not verified the placement claimed in its records.
Alma asked whether the statement would remove the description that she had refused housing.
The advocate said the provider would need to correct its own record, but the foundation’s statement would support her request.
Mateo looked up from his drawing and asked why adults wrote things about his mother that were not true.
Nobody answered immediately.
Alma said sometimes people made mistakes and sometimes they avoided checking because checking was inconvenient.
Mateo asked whether the adults would fix it.
The advocate said they were working on it and would tell his mother what happened next.
Alma thanked her for answering without making a promise about a date.
After the meeting, Yvette met them near the reception desk.
She apologized for the foundation’s part in the false report.
Alma said the apology mattered less than the correction, but she appreciated hearing it directly.
Mateo showed Yvette his drawing of a bus with enormous windows.
He said he wanted to become a driver because drivers always knew where they were going.
Yvette smiled and said she hoped he would find good roads.
When they left, Simone told Yvette that the housing provider had agreed to review the disputed record within ten business days.
Yvette asked Simone to follow up on the actual deadline rather than mark the case closed.
Simone said she already had.
