CHAPTER 10: MY FATHER’S CALL
I read the line three times before the words made sense.
My father had called Victor because he believed Patricia was abducting a child.
He knew nothing about the threats against Owen.
Patricia had refused to explain the situation, and Laurel had begged him to stay out of it until she could arrange legal help.
He thought his daughter was being manipulated.
He contacted the boy’s father, hoping an adult confrontation would bring everyone home.
Instead, Victor arrived at the cabin that night.
The argument that followed terrified Owen.
Laurel drove the boy away while Patricia and Victor argued in the driveway.
They went to the attorney’s house, where a temporary protection plan was arranged through the proper authorities.
“Your sister didn’t vanish from that meeting,” Claire explained.
“She chose not to return home immediately.”
I asked why she had never called me.
Claire said Laurel believed my father would reveal where Owen had gone if he became frightened again.
At first, she intended to wait until the custody matter ended.
Then the public accusations grew, and Victor began threatening anyone who helped.
Laurel changed her number and moved with assistance from a network of family advocates.
I asked whether that network was legal.
Nora said protective services and court arrangements could involve confidential addresses, but she would not describe a specific program without records.
“The important point is that Laurel was not hiding a crime,” Nora said.
“She was helping a child through a complicated case.”
The money orders came later.
My father sent assistance through Claire after learning that his call had placed the child in danger.
He tried to repair the damage without forcing Laurel to face him.
“Why didn’t he tell me?” I asked.
Claire looked toward his empty chair.
“He was ashamed.”
I felt no comfort in that answer.
Shame had taken twenty-two years from my family.
I asked Nora whether the letter finally explained Patricia’s attack on my mailbox.
Nora shook her head.
“Not yet,” she said.
“There is another issue that began much more recently.”
