CHAPTER SEVEN: THE GARDEN CONCERT

The garden concert at Oak Haven was attended by only thirty guests.
Selena found the smaller gathering more intimidating than the crowded ballroom because every conversation seemed to carry across the lawns.
William greeted her beside a row of white roses.
“Clara has been asking for you since breakfast,” he said.
“I hope that is not a burden.”
“It is a pleasure,” Selena answered.
“But I would like her to understand that I cannot always appear whenever she wishes.”
William nodded.
“You are right.”
“I am surprised you agree so readily.”
“I am trying to become less foolish.

”
She smiled.
They walked toward the terrace, where Clara was showing her wooden bird to a boy with freckles.
The child ran to Selena and took her hand.
“Uncle William says we may sit near the musicians.”
“Then we must be quiet while they play,” Selena said.
“I can be quiet,” Clara promised.
The concert began with a string quartet.
During the second piece, Selena noticed Mrs. Vale standing near the doorway with a folded note in her hand.
The governess spoke briefly to a footman, who looked toward William before leaving by the side passage.
Selena thought little of it until Clara leaned against her arm.

“Mrs. Vale says I must go away again next week.”
Selena turned.
“Go where?”
“To the house by the sea.”
“Does your uncle know?”
Clara shook her head.
“She says it is better if he does not worry.”
Selena’s stomach tightened.
She waited until the quartet finished before approaching William.
“May I ask whether Clara is expected to travel next week?”
His expression darkened.
“No.”
“She believes that she is.”
William looked across the terrace toward Mrs. Vale.
“I shall discover why.”
“Please do not question Clara as though she has done something wrong.”
“I will not.”
He paused.
“Will you remain until after luncheon?”
“If Clara wishes it.

”
“I am asking for myself,” William said.
Selena met his eyes.
“Then yes,” she answered.
